"Relationship Marketing Guru". "The new Einstein of Marketing". "Genius". "True Artist". "Leonardo da Vinci of the Internet". These are some of the titles people have bestowed on me in the past. Flattering as they are, they show that you are not dealing with your average Management & CRM Consultant here. Involved in Database Marketing and Relationship Management since 1993, my skill set combines extensive management, marketing and IT experience - both at strategic and front-end level. I've travelled the world from Bangkok to San Francisco, from Dubai to Asunción, presenting my 'Diamond CRM' business transformation model at marketing conferences. Companies all over the world utilise it as a guideline in their quest to become more customer-centric. My articles have been widely published online and in print.
Having developed my own Internet presence since 1995 and client projects since 1997, I've developed way over 60 websites. I use PHP, MySQL, Javascript and CSS. I have designed anything from 'quick and dirty (but pretty)' to complex database applications, e-commerce and content management system sites. On the design side I am capably assisted by Solveigh Thude and other select designers. As you may have guessed, this website is also a product of mine - line by line hand-coded - giving you more than a good idea of what I can do for you!
Photography is but a feeble attempt to capture the transient, the fleeting moments. It has always been a passion of mine. I took my first pictures in Grade 2 at the tender age of 6. In 1980 I got my first SLR, a Yashica FR-1. In 1992 an upgrade to a Contax RTS III threw me into a different photographic orbit. I left it in 2003 when I went digital with an Olympus C-5050Z, only to return to it later when the Oly hit the ground and died a sudden death. Right now I'm using a Fuji F30, waiting for the release of the new Olympus E. Despite it being only a hobby, my photos have made it into books, onto CD covers, Youth Hostel ID cards, hotel and golf course brochures and many other places - even turned into paintings! Obviously, all pictures on this site are mine, so... enjoy!
Ever since I set up my own shop I have done major startup work for companies like Opera Software and Sonork SRL. On the side I have been involved in the GEOS and BeOS operating environments. I work on the Net. As a result, this section deals with my personal software recommendations. The products are all non-mainstream, which pretty much by default makes them superior to the more popular choices. The products include Opera (browser), Becky (email), Edit+ (Text/Programming Editor), TotalCommander (File Manager), Outpost Firewall, IrfanView (Image Viewer), Canvas (Image, Graphics and DTP Editor), the Zeta OS (ex-BeOS) and many others. Rest assured taat my recommendations will make your computing experience more productive, safer, faster and less expensive. What more need I say?!
Since 1999 Inspired Mind has helped thousands to live a better life. Originally conceived under the name "Mindshift" as part of Opera Software ASA, it's a portal of sorts that contains content you'd normally have to look hard for. Categories include Business, Community, Education, Environment, Health, Home & Garden, Technology and more. Here you will also find various book recommendations and an immense number of links to other sites on the Net. A real treasure chest for the inquiring mind!
Vuvu is an ambitious project, if there ever was one. I've lived in South Africa for more than a decade. After witnessing the first 10 years of the so-called democracy, I've come to realise that 'democracy' the way it's implemented and practiced in this country has simply formed another form of apartheid. It's only that political oppression has made way to economic oppression, which in many ways is far more insidious. Vuvu - short for 'vuvuzela', the infamous horn ubiqutous at local soccer matches - aims at putting together a masterplan for a new South Africa, a compendium for a decent life for all, not just the old white rich and the new black rich. Your participation is encouraged and appreciated.

Marketing Competence was founded in order to provide a resource for CRM students and managers alike. It's been online since 1997 as an Internet resource on Total Customer Management. Prior to that I founded and managed the world's first mailing list on Database Marketing and Relationship Management, DM-Digest. Neglected of late because it had outlived itself, it has now been redesigned and incorporated into this site. Enjoy!
This section is my personal blog on current affairs in South Africa and beyond. Don't expect daily postings, but I am sure you will find something of interest in it. At the very least it may plant a seed in your mind, that may one day grow into something big. Welcome and enjoy!

Würde man jetzt — hypothetisch (!)

We arrived a bit early, although our table was only for 21:00. Needless to say that there was ample space available. In fact, when we came in, the entire bar section at the front was empty. Why they only allowed us to book for 21:00 will remain their secret.
Haiku is a pretty dark place, but quite stylish. As you come into the main dining area (which you cannot see from the street), there's a long kitchen and counter (to sit on) on the right hand side, with the dining area to the left. The decor is modern - a bit stark - yet exudes an elegant simplicity.
The welcome was very friendly, but our waiter a little too keen to clear the table - he could have left the stuff standing there a little longer.
Their menu is rather interesting. You pay per star, each one representing R35, and you need to consume at least four stars, read: R140 per person. Well, for that it had better be good - but it wasn't 100%.
It started with some rather spicy nibblies as we sat down - a nice touch. We then chose a Miso Soup and a Sweet Corn Soup, both of them nice, but not worth the R35, that's for sure. Willoughby's
Miso Soup is much nicer than this one, and IIRC it's only R19.
Then we went for the 2nd course. I had Tuna Sashimi sald, which was superb! It comes with an orangy sauce which makes it really delicious. I could have stopped after that, to be honest. Carla chose the BBQ Duck Spring Roll, which was also very nice. I'm not a friend of Duck... a bit too heavy for my liking.
The main course was also delicious. I had a whole fried fish (kingklip) while Carla had Beef Broccoli. Both were worth the 2 stars (R70). We kindly skipped desert as we were full after the soups, the starters and the mains.
The bill came to about R400 incl tip which was quite pricey given me just having one glass of wine. That said, I didn't expect Haiku to be cheap, but it wasn't the WOW experience either. It was a nice evening out, not only because Carla footed the bill (it's my turn next), but there are places where you get equally good food for less. I guess in the end it still balances itself out sortof ok, but for R200 a person it has to be tops - and it wasn't quite.
So there, my Haiku experience. If you're flush, pay them a visit and let me know what you think of it. Would love to hear from you!
Ah.. rating... 8 out of 10. There you go! :)

LiveMarkets is a live-chat advertising network, allowing companies to turn their static ads into live chats - and that means on any website they run ads on rather than just their own homepage. The reasoning behind it is that the interaction is far more personal, more relevant and therefore more effective, especially in the high-value segment rather than in the consumables department.
A few months modifications to the
Qunu source code gave us something that we could present at the recent
Ad-Tech conference at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco. Baden Gilmore, our new man on the team, was there, bringing it to the attention of the world. And the lines have been buzzing ever since. This and
this article in VentureBeat generated a lot of interest, giving Baden more than he bargained for.
So, after many years of preparation, some dead-ends, lots of highs, some lows too, we're now in the process of riding the wave. Stay tuned for more!
LiveMarkets launched
When our inner peace and well-being depend on forces outside ourselves (circumstances, the marketplace, other people) the stress and anxiety that result in personal conflict, and that get in the way of our effectiveness, are always close at hand. Our buttons get all too easily pushed.
But as we become more established in our true, awakened nature, we are far less at the effect of those outer forces. We then bring greater clarity, confidence, and focus to the problems needing our attention. We are able to act decisively and generate results with more consistency and predictability. In those instances where events do not work out favorably, we are able to more quickly make the adjustments needed to get things back on track.
The simplest and most direct method for making the shift back to our true nature is as follows: As often as you remember throughout the day, pause and take the time to breathe slowly and consciously. Then bring your awareness slightly behind and above your head. This is more the real you. From this place, make your body, sense, and mind/personality objects of observation. It is as if you are witnessing all that is arising within your awareness.
If you are being bothered by a particular thought, belief, or story (for example, “What if I fail?”) examine it objectively. Be very still for a moment or two, and look at the belief as you would any object from this detached place slightly behind and above yourself. Do not judge it or analyze it. Become aware of yourself as the awareness, or consciousness, that is looking at this particular belief. Now be aware that what you are looking at, you cannot be. You are what is looking.
The belief, “What if I fail?” is just a thought form arising within the field of awareness that you are. When you stop identifying with it through the practice of presence, you cease giving it power. Through applying this technique many times a day, eventually the belief will lose its charge. It will no longer be a button for you. No belief or thought form can persist for long in the light of clear, sustained awareness, or conscious presence.
After you have freed yourself from one limiting belief, then take the next one that is causing conflict, and work with it in the same way. The more you do this, the more your head will clear, and you will come to a place of authentic inner freedom. Instead of living from your mind and its worries, you will live from an alert yet relaxed sense of awareness in the present. Then you will be able to use your mind for the powerful creative tool that it is, but it will no longer be a source of conflict or stress for you.
